The 78704 ZIP code is popular, vibrant, and chock-full of Austin-centric activities and amenities. It is possibly the most sought after area in town, encompassing the Zilker Park, Bouldin Creek, South Lamar, South First, and South Congress neighborhoods.
Zilker Park, the Greenbelt, and the Hike & Bike Trail
Austin is known as a healthy city, and the Barton Hills and South Congress neighborhoods have some of the best access to parks and the Austin trail system. Zilker Park is walking distance from most homes in 78704, which means you can walk to the Austin City Limits Music Festival, Blues on the Green, the Kite Festival, and more. In addition to annual events, Barton Springs pool, Deep Eddy pool, the Hike & Bike Trail, and the miles of additional trails in the Greenbelt will be easily accessible from your home.
South Congress and South First
South Congress, or SoCo, and South First streets have long been high-traffic tourist spots and are well known for their old-Austin shops and restaurants. There is no shortage of great coffee, from Jo’s Coffee and its infamous I Love You So Much mural on SoCo to Fair Bean Coffee and its amazing empanadas (made in-house) on South First. Along South First you can find a record shop, vintage clothing stores, and trendy food spots including Sway and Elizabeth Street Cafe. Odd Duck is just a hop over on South Lamar. The area also boasts multiple food truck eateries featuring Bananarchy, the original Torchy’s Tacos truck, and Hey Cupcake. On the first Thursday of each month, wander down South Congress to shop local artisans’ handmade jewelry and artwork.
Alamo Drafthouse’s South Lamar location has been recently renovated and continues to offer an excellent movie-watching experience. It neighbors the also-renovated Highball, where you can rent karaoke rooms, enjoy live music and dancing on Motown Mondays, and always grab a quality cocktail before your Drafthouse flick. In addition to the Lamar Square area opportunities, ZACH and Zilker Hillside theaters are just a short walk north. ZACH features shows year-round, and Zilker Hillside Theater offers free outdoor performances of a different musical every summer. Past shows have included Shrek, Hairspray, and the Wizard of Oz.
Of course, live music abounds. Popular venues include the Saxon Pub, One to One Bar, the Continental Club, the Continental Club Gallery, and more. During SXSW, you’ll be walking distance from countless live music shows. Don’t forget concerts in the park on the Long Center lawn in the summers.
The 78704 ZIP code is friendly to families and young singles alike. With great access to an array of entertainment, fitness opportunities, and some of the best restaurants around, it’s no wonder this is a highly sought-after area.
