As proud Austinites, we never question why we live in the capital of Texas. With an abundant job market, endless recreational fun, and 228 days of sunshine a year, who would?
But there’s a certain part of the year where we find ourselves perhaps not quite as in love with our city as usual. The triple-digit temperatures can be brutal, and sweltering streaks can even last months. Fortunately, our fair city comes to the rescue, because it boasts endless options for keeping you cool despite the scorching heat — here are our very favorites.
Find Culture at a Museum
What better way to stay cool than by roaming the air-conditioned halls of a museum? The Blanton Museum of Art boasts a collection from Ancient Greek pottery to abstract modern art. Best of all, it’s free every Thursday. The Harry Ransom Center is an internationally recognized humanities research library and museum sure to wow lovers of literature, film, and the performing arts. If you’ve got kids in town, check out the Thinkery, Austin’s hands-on science museum for little ones, with interactive exhibits, play spaces, and story time.
Take a Dance Class
Ballet Austin isn’t just for ballerinas, and it’s not just for ballet either. If you’ve ever wanted to take beginner dance lessons from an instructor, you’re in luck. From Hawaiian and hip-hop, to tap and musical theatre dance, you’ll cure your two left feet and have the time of your life doing so. Ballet Austin also offers various fitness workshops for all ages, and most classes are available as workshops, drop-in classes, or as private lessons.
Get on the Ice
Playland Skate Center is a great choice for anyone who’s good on four wheels, but in a sweltering Austin summer, no AC is competition enough for the frosty chill of an ice rink. At Chaparral Ice, you can cool down every afternoon during public skate time and learn or improve your ice skating skills. The best part is you’ll be able to dig out your favorite winter sweater for the day and temporarily forget that just outside, it’s hot enough to fry an egg on the pavement.
Jump into a Spring-Fed Pool
Back in the 1920s, Deep Eddy Pool was a resort, boasting a tall slide, Ferris wheel, and even a 50-foot-tall diving platform that riders on horses would leap from. These days, it’s a bit calmer as a spring-fed swimming pool that Austinites flock to during the sweatiest months. It’s a few degrees warmer than rival pool Barton Springs, which means you can comfortably stay in the water all day and never have to break a sweat. If you find yourself unable to leave by sunset, stay for one of their monthly Splash Party movie nights, where you can enjoy family-favorite films from your inner tube!
Go Underground for a Couple Hours
If you’re up for a short ride, Georgetown has a one-of-a-kind experience waiting for you. Inner Space Cavern resides just below the surface of the Earth there, maintaining a comfortable temperature of 72 degrees year round. Take a guided tour among the prehistoric remains, and fill your day with some mystery and history!
Need a break from the heat and the sun? Retreat to the Alamo Drafthouse so you can ditch your sunglasses for a few hours and soak up the cool, dark atmosphere of Austin’s favorite movie theater chain. From kid-friendly screenings to quote-alongs and obscure cult films, Alamo has a little something for everyone. You might even be tempted to beat the heat with a double or triple screening.
Enjoy a Scoop
Like dessert? Let your sweet tooth keep you cool this summer and head to one of Austin’s many options for frozen treats. From snow cones at the Sno Beach food truck, to Dolce Neve’s creamy gelato, to the wild flavors and generous helpings at Amy’s Ice Cream, you’re never far from a sugary scoop that will keep your sweating to a minimum. For a boozy take on your dessert, try Prohibition Creamery for a sangria-flavored ice cream or a triple bourbon milkshake. And dairy-free folks are covered, too—Sweet Ritual has a wide variety of tasty vegan ice creams and shakes.
Of course, you don’t have to leave home to stay cool this summer. Some of the best ways to conquer the heat are in your very own home. Of the many new homes Austin has to offer, many have pools, offering the ultimate way to stay sweat-free all summer long.
